Why Does My Candle Tunnel? How to Prevent and Fix It

Tunnelling is when a candle burns straight down the middle, leaving a thick ring of unburned wax stuck to the sides of the jar. It's the single most common way a good candle gets wasted — on a large jar it can leave a third of what you paid for welded to the glass. The good news: it's almost entirely preventable, and fixable if you catch it early.

Why candles tunnel

The first burn was too short

This causes most tunnelling. Wax has what candle makers call a memory — the width a candle's melt pool reaches on its first burn is roughly the width it follows for the rest of its life. Blow it out after 45 minutes, and every future burn tracks that same narrow ring.

The wick is too short, or untrimmed

A wick trimmed too aggressively can't generate enough heat to melt across the full diameter. Left too long, it burns unevenly and smokes.

The candle is in a draught

Airflow pushes the flame to one side. The wax melts unevenly, and the melt pool never reaches the far edge.

The wick is off-centre

Sometimes a manufacturing issue, sometimes the wick drifting while the wax set. It melts one side faster and leaves a shelf on the other.

How to stop it: the first burn rule

This is the whole thing, and it takes one evening to get right.

On the very first burn, leave the candle lit until the melted wax reaches the edge of the container all the way round.

For most jar candles that takes two to three hours — roughly one hour per inch of container diameter. Don't blow it out early; the memory you set on that first burn is the one you live with.

Then for every burn after that:

  • Trim the wick to about 5 mm before you light it, every time.
  • Burn for at least an hour, so the pool has time to spread.
  • Never burn for more than four hours in one sitting.
  • Keep it out of draughts — away from open windows, doorways, air conditioning and radiators.

How to fix a candle that's already tunnelling

The foil method (mild to moderate tunnelling)

  1. Trim the wick to 5 mm.
  2. Light the candle.
  3. Wrap foil around the top of the jar, folded inward into a dome with a hole above the flame.
  4. Leave for 30–60 minutes — the foil traps heat down onto the hardened rim.
  5. Remove carefully once the surface has levelled.

Never leave a candle unattended while doing this, and don't let the foil touch the flame.

The hairdryer method (thin, even rim)

Aim a hairdryer on low heat at the surface until the top layer softens and evens out. Let it re-set fully before lighting.

If the tunnel is severe

Once the wick is buried well below the wax line, it's usually beyond rescue as a candle. Freeze the jar for a few hours, lever the wax out with a spoon, and use the pieces in a wax warmer. Soy wax is water soluble at wash temperature, so the jar washes clean and can be reused.

Does the wax type make a difference?

Yes. Soy wax has a lower melt point than paraffin, so it spreads more readily and is somewhat more forgiving of a short first burn — though the first burn rule still applies. Container shape matters too: wide, shallow jars tunnel more easily than narrow, tall ones.

Can a badly tunnelled candle be saved?

Mild and moderate tunnelling can be fixed with the foil method. Once the wick is buried below the wax, it's generally not recoverable as a candle, but the wax can be removed and used in a warmer.

Why does my candle tunnel even though I burn it for hours?

Check the wick length and draughts first. An over-trimmed wick can't produce enough heat, and even gentle airflow will pull the flame off-centre.

Is tunnelling a sign of a badly made candle?

Occasionally — an off-centre wick or wrongly sized wick will tunnel no matter what you do. But most tunnelling comes down to a short first burn.
